Evaluating an NBA draft instantly after it unfolds is somewhat like trying to predict the weather a month in advance. We can forecast, but true understanding comes with time. That said, we can't help but sketch the early contours of the 2023 NBA Draft's landscape, delineating the victors and the not-so-fortunate.
Winners
San Antonio Spurs
In an NBA draft version of hitting the jackpot, the Spurs once again stood out, drawing the lucky number in the lottery. The prize? The French phenom, Victor Wemanyama, whose towering 7-foot-4 presence at the No.1 spot echoed the past glories of David Robinson and Tim Duncan.
Houston Rockets
Even a tumble to No. 4 in the lottery couldn't hinder the Rockets' grand plans of a revival. A new era dawns with the arrival of coach Ime Udoka and an infusion of new talent in the form of 6-7 guard Amen Thompson. And adding to their lucky break was the unexpected opportunity to pick up Cam Whitmore at No. 20, a player once tipped for the top 10.
Disappointments
Knicks
The Knicks, after a prudent move last year that led to the successful acquisition of free-agent guard Jalen Brunson, struggled to recreate the magic. Their actions left them with only a second-round selection from the previous year, Trevor Keels, as their notable draft participation.
Washington Wizards
The Wizards' rebuilding efforts, including significant trades involving Bradley Beal, Kristaps Porzingis, and Chris Paul, failed to deliver immediate returns, leading to only a single conditional selection in 2030 from the Warriors. Losing Kyle Kuzma, who opted out of his contract, adds to their woes.
